The Journey of Two: Mind Games

My new solo exhibition at 107Projects at Redfren 19-31 January 2016 Opening night 20 January 6 – 8pm

“I suddenly heard a distant bell ringing way back in my head. The glimmering of an idea, not an idea yet but just the hint of one. I wasn’t sure where it led, or if it led anywhere at all, but I was going to find out” Donald E. Westlake The Risk Profession 1968

Ideas are usually construed as mental representational images of some object. The capacity to create and understand the meaning of ideas is considered to be an essential and defining feature of human beings. In a widely held sense, an idea arises in a reflexive, spontaneous manner.

The place of ideas – the cerebral cortex  – is an extensive layer of grey matter of the cerebral hemispheres, largely responsible for higher brain functions, including sensation, voluntary muscle movement, thought, reasoning and memory.

My works are an attempt to reach and see below the surface.  Below the surface of one’s mind.  To thoughts. To ideas. How they come to fruition. Their pathways.  How they change. They alter.  To see below.  How a simple idea blossoms to a convoluted, complicated solution.  Concrete ideas vs abstract ideas, simple ideas vs complex ideas.

To put on canvas or paper – what is an idea.  From start to finish. The process, using paint, ink etc  to document an idea.  How elements are brought together to form that idea.

Those are the Mind Games

This 2 in 1 exhibition highlights different approaches to  the exploration of these thoughts. It explores 2 main areas of my arts practice: works on paper and acrylic works on canvas.
